Bra Straps & elastics
Bra making involves a lot of different elastics.
Bra Strapping, or shoulder strap elastics, can be found in many different weights and widths. The wider and more heavyweight the strap the more supportive it is. It is always recommended that a 19mm heavyweight strap be used for larger bust sizes (D cups and up). Bralettes suit a 8mm, 10mm or 12mm strap.
Facing Elastics - are made in many different profiles. They can have a scallop edge, picot edge or piping edge profileamong a few. They are also made in many different weights, with heavyweight being a firmer and stronger elastic. For cups A - C in sizes 8 - 14 a 10-12mm facing elastic is adequate for the underarm and band of the bra. In larger cup and band sizes, it is recommended that a 10mm width be used for the underarm and a 15mm for the band. Some patterns also require a 19mm facing elastic for the band. These widths may also be a personal preference. Be sure your band elastic sits underneath your underwire casing to ensure the lower part of your bra does not 'flip' up when not on your body.
Folding Elastics, also known as fold over elastics, may be used for the underarm of a molded cup bra.
Lingerie Elastics are useful for some bralettes or wire free bra options.
